Best bets for July 6-7

Several weekends during the summer yard sale season are light on the yard sales. This is one of them.

Chalk it up to the holiday: Lots of people take their vacations around the 4th. And the heat, too. It’s brutal. Who wants to sit out in stifling temperatures?

Well, apparently some people don’t mind, as a handful of brave souls have chosen this weekend to sell their wares.

Here’s our best bets:

A Saturday and Sunday yard sale in Ashcombe Homes in Dover is INDOORS. Two-bedroom home and all the contents. Wall-to-wall sale! the ad says. These folks are even selling a 2004 Pontiac Vibe. Address is 1852 Deerfield; hours 8-4 p.m.

The Penn Oaks neighborhood in Springettsbury Township has a Friday and Saturday sale at 3340 Oakham Drive. Gotta love this ad: “30+years of careless spending!” Hours are 8-2 p.m.

A sale today through Saturday at 2424 Broad St. in Shiloh boasts their “clearing out all the nooks and crannies in an empty nest.” Hours are 8 till ?

As always, check out the classifieds in The York Dispatch for a full listing. And stay cool.

Best bets for June 22-23

Yard sale season is in full swing this weekend. And the weather should cooperate, too.

Friday will be hot again, but Saturday cools down to about the mid-80s. Check out the full forecast here.

Lots and lots of good sales in the Dispatch classifieds. Here’s our best bets:

COMMUNITY SALES

Fox Meadow Drive community in Dover holds a Friday and Saturday sale from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. This one’s for early-risers!

Beaver Colony Estates and Crestview in East Berlin holds a 40+family sale Saturday starting at 8 a.m..

Wilshire Hills in East York is holding its 10th annual community sale, with some starting Friday but most on Saturday. (This one’s a favorite of one of our Yard Sale staffers.)

Colony Park Condo Association in the city holds its sale from 8-2 on Saturday.

Haines Acres in East York is worth a drive-through Friday and Saturday. Sales are scattered throughout.

INTERESTING ITEMS

A sale at 279 Good Road in Airville Thursday through Saturday features lots of kids’ clothing, including twin girls 4, 5 and 6 clothes.

A sale at 206 DeGuy Ave. in Hanover is selling  boating goods, including a boat!

A multi-family sale at 818 Latimer St. in North York is selling shotgun reloaders, a crossbow, gun safe and a dishwasher. Interesting combination there.

CHURCH SALES

First Assembly of God at 2270 Susquehanna Trail is having a yard sale starting at 7 on Saturday. This one also features Summerfest from 10 to 2, with a kids area and a car show. That’s a lot going on!

First Church of the Brethren at 2710 Kingston Road in Springetts is having a huge yard and bake sale Saturday from 8 to 3. Serving indoor lunch.

BEST AD

The previously mentioned First Church of the Brethren ad says “Early birds will be baptized.” Love it.

A REAL BARN SALE at 1466 Cooper Road in New Freedom on Friday and Saturday must be at a poet’s home. The ad says “Rust! Dust! Come to this sale you must!” Well, it’s either a poet or Yoda.

Best bets for June 8-9

Wow, every day this week would have been a great one to hold a yard sale, and the weekend looks to be no different.

Forecast calls for lots of sun and warm temperatures. Perfect for getting out and looking at other people’s stuff, or selling your own.

And lots of folks are holding sales this weekend. Here’s our best bets, culled from The York Dispatch classifieds.

NEIGHBORHOOD AND MULTI-FAMILY SALES

  • Looking for hunting and fishing gear as well as antiques? Check out the multi-family sale Friday and Saturday starting at 8 both days at 4590 Dairy Road off Route 24 in Red Lion.
  • A multi-family sale at 2215 Landon Lane in York Township 8-3 Friday and Saturday features lots of stuff, including a clothes dryer.
  • A “huge, huge” yard sale Friday and Saturday is at the corner of Hill N Dale and Daleview, off Tyler Run Road in York Township.
  • On the east side, a neighborhood sale with 15-plus houses is Thursday through Saturday, starting at 8, at 830 Woods Drive off Locust Grove Road. Sales are throughout the development.
  • Four families are together in Penn Oaks South for a yard sale Friday and Saturday on Cimmeron Road. This one is dangerously close to one of our “Yard Sale Secrets” writer’s homes. Yippee!
  • Sentry Woods in Springettsbury Township has a Saturday only sale from 8 to 2.

INTERESTING ITEMS FOR SALE

  • That “huge, huge” yard sale Friday and Saturday at the corner of Hill N Dale and Daleview, off Tyler Run Road in York Township, features Star Trek videos, the first through the last all in original boxes. Oh and a washer and dryer, too, but those are not nearly as fun as Star Trek.
  • A sale in Dover at the corner of Emig Mill and Salem Church roads Thursday through Sunday has lots of sewing items. Do people still sew? I guess these people don’t anymore.

MOST INTERESTING SALE

Here’s a new one: A sale in Manchester Township at 55 Riding Silks Lane is a HUGE BOGO SALE. But it’s only for five hours on Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. Small timeframe, large savings, so says the ad. (Anyone who doesn’t know what BOGO means needs to turn in their shopaholic’s card.)

Best bets for March 30-31

The weekend’s weather won’t be absolutely perfect for a yard-sale spending spree, but that hasn’t stopped people from planning them.

That alone is enough for us here at Yard Sale Secrets to launch our weekly Best Bets column.

Here’s a snapshot of the what caught our eye, as advertised in the Thursday edition of the York Dispatch.

 BEST BETS

If you’re heading into southeastern York County, you can hit two good ones:

  • Chanceford Presbyterian Church will have a set up from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that includes antiques, toys and books.
  • The Fiddler’s Yard Sale at 1448 Main St. Extended in Brogue has 30 tables booked, which means more stuff in one stop.

Elsewhere, you might want to check in on:

  • A sale in Dallastown’s Rydell Drive will be good for kids clothes.
  • A multifamily affair across from the  Springwood Golf Course promises to be “HUGE” and offers scrap-booking supplies.
  • For those still trying to eke some life out of their old VHS tapes, a sale on Pine Street in York is offering a VCR, along with other more up-to-date items. That sale is outside and inside, making it rainproof.

Guys can land some big items this week:

  • Lewisberry has a sale at 586 Ridge Road that includes auto parts, a whole car, lawnmowers and more. They even have a piano.
  • In Dover, a house on Abby Lane includes a snowblower. With the way York weather is, you might just get a chance to use it a little later.
  • A moving sale at 3240 Rosstown Road in Wellsville has some archery equipment. Look out, you might have to fight some “Hunger Games” fans for that.

WEATHER FORECAST

Both Friday and Saturday will start out on the chilly side, according to the National Weather Service. Friday morning temperatures will be climbing out the low 30s. Saturday morning temps will start out a bit higher, with overnight lows in the 40s. Afternoon temperatures on both days are expected to be in the high 50s

The problem is that both days are predicted to have a slight chance of rain, which can wreck any chance of a good day of sales.
